Spirituals and soul music share common roots that can be traced from the 19th century revival movement and 20th century performers like Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers, directly to contemporary pop singers including Aretha Franklin, John Legend and Beyoncé.

Students in this workshop will be introduced to the history and evolution of this music and will work on selected solo and group performance pieces.
