Maracatu de nação - Afro-Brazilian Drumming - with Aline Morales

New this year!
Maracatu de nação is an Afro-Brazilian performance genre. For this class, Aline will focus on drumming and teaching the various drums and rhythms that come together in Maracatu. Song form is call and response between a solo singer and a chorus, and participants are welcome to sing as well as drum.

The musical ensemble consists of alfaia (large wooden rope-tuned drum), gonguê (metal cowbell), tarol (shallow snare drum), caixa-de-guerra (another type of snare drum), agbê (gourd shaker enveloped in beads), and mineiro (metal cylindrical shaker filled with metal shot or small dried seeds).

Is this class for you?
