Jazz Combos with various faculty, co-ordinated by Gillian Stecyk

The Broadway show tunes that jazz musicians such as Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra and John Coltrane made their own get referred to as ‘jazz standards’ and remain the core repertoire that most jazz vocalists and instrumentalists perform. This class brings together vocalists and instrumentalists interested in learning this aspect of the jazz tradition and will perform music written by George Gershwin, Rogers and Hart and Cole Porter and made famous by the aforementioned jazz artists and others.

While each group will focus on the great American Songbook for collaboration with a singer, each instrumental group may also work on innovative compositions written by jazz instrumentalists in a variety of styles.

The class may touch on everything from the 1940's bebop of Charlie Parker and the 1960's modal jazz of John Coltrane to the current compositions of modern jazz artists such as John Scofield or Branford Marsalis, and music composed by Lake Field Music's own faculty.

Participants will be placed in groups based on information provided in the course selection form. The type of groups formed depends upon the enrolled participants’ experience, skill level and instrument or voice. The groups will be team coached by our faculty; vocalists and instrumentalists will work separately at the start of the week, then vocalists will join their instrumental group to rehearse. Music will be provided.

Is this class for you?

This course is for intermediate/advanced instrumentalists and vocalists. Singers should be comfortable singing solo and being backed by a band. Instrumentalists should be comfortable reading a lead sheet and playing scales in different keys so that they can focus on improvising, which is a big part of this kind of group.
This class has limited enrollment; space is still available.
